きのこ帝国 (Kinoko Teikoku, “Mushroom Empire”) is a Japanese shoegaze and dream pop band which was discovered by me two weeks ago. I’m listening to them since then and basically can’t force myself to stop doing that. I had to have a very indifferent opinion about dream pop and light shoegaze music, but these Japanese magicians completely changed my mind.
ロンググッドバイ (Long Goodbye)
I scrolled kilometres of the friends feed, found this band and now I’m a huge fan. This it how it works. You can’t expect to find good ones on daily basis, but chances are pretty high though. So what’s “Kinoko Teikoku” about?
It’s a traditional four-piece Japanese band with a recognisable style and the great atmosphere. The sound is very lucid and calm, but sometimes guitarist remembers that there’s a guitar hanging on the neck and dream pop transforms into shoegaze with the rock elements. As far as I know, the singer is not only singing and play the guitar, but she is also a well-known actress in Japan. She has a very nice voice of a unique tone. It’s a pleasure just to listen to it even without understanding.

Style. I liked these simple songs and melodies with a soft voice and gentle guitars. Music is very atmospheric and gentle. It sounds like a soundtrack of someone’s love. When I listen to 「ロンググッドバイ」 I always remember books of Haruki Murakami: “Hear The Wind Sing” and “Afterdark”. It’s the music of young girls and boys in their twenties, a music of their love and loss. Some melodies are slothful, some are fast. Like the wind or a promise of rain in the middle of the warm summer.
Length. 「ロンググッドバイ」 is the first EP of きのこ帝国 and it’s not very long. I listened to it three times in a row and still can’t get enough of it.
In comparison with other Japanese shoegazers, THE NOVEMBERS, this album is simpler, but it has catchy melodies and unique vocals. Definitely worth listening.
